Direct Import to ProjectLocker

ProjectLocker Subversion hosting recently got a new feature that makes it even easier to import your Subversion repositories.

We've long offered automated imports of Subversion dumps via FTP, SFTP, or HTTP. However, some users have indicated that they don't have the access on their existing Subversion server necessary to secure a complete dump of their existing repositories. As a result, we've built an importer that can help in some of those cases. Simply provide the URL and authentication credentials of your existing repository, and our importer will directly import your repository into ProjectLocker. All with no command-line expertise required. You don't even need a separate server to host the dump file! What could be easier?

Direct Subversion Imports are available now via ProjectLocker Portal.

Automatic Deployments

One of the most frequently-requested features at ProjectLocker is the ability to automatically deploy code from your repository to another server. While we've had manual deployments for a while, this wasn't scratching the deployment itch for all of our users. So today we're announcing the availability of automatic deployments for Subversion.

Automatic deployments allow you to tell ProjectLocker to automatically kick off a deployment of your choosing on each commit to your repository. Simply configure your Remote Deployment settings for your project and indicate that you'd like per-commit deployments for a given deployment environment, and you're ready to go. And since you can create as many deployment environments as you like, you can still choose to configure some of those for manual deployment. So you could configure your project to deploy to your staging server on every commit, but wait for manual intervention before deploying to your production server.

Automatic deployments are available immediately to all ProjectLocker Venture and Equity accounts.

WebHooks Land at ProjectLocker

ProjectLocker recently introduced WebHooks for our Git hosting and Subversion hosting services, which allow you to configure ProjectLocker to notify one of your servers anytime a push (Git) or commit (Subversion) happens. The notification isn't just a 'ping', but provides all the relevant information about the event -- files changed, author, timestamp, etc. (The full JSON format is described in detail in the ProjectLocker FAQ.) That means you can use WebHooks for whatever you want -- integrating with your continuous integration server, sending out custom notifications, or anything else that could benefit from real-time updates from your repository.

WebHooks are available immediately for all paid ProjectLocker accounts.

Remote Deploy for FTP/SFTP/SCP is Here!

Due to heavy customer demand, we've worked hard to release our newest feature: Remote Deployment. With Remote Deployment, you can deploy code directly from your SVN repository at ProjectLocker to your servers without writing scripts on your machine. You can configure multiple environments to represent your development, QA, or production deployment needs. We support transport of your data via FTP, SFTP, and SCP, and we even allow you to run SSH commands on your server after the deploy is complete! We even provide a public key that you can install to your deployment user's account to allow secure deployment without passwords. To try it out, just go to your Project page in ProjectLocker Portal and click on Remote Deploy Settings. The tool is in Beta at this time, so if you have any issues, please open a ticket or contact us via e-mail, and we'll be happy to assist.

We hope our customers find this feature useful in managing their development. Being able to deploy to multiple environments on-demand means that you can do release management more easily and on a schedule that suits you, without lots of scripting and additional hardware. Do you need a Subversion client?

Whether you're running Subversion yourself on your local servers or taking advantage of one of ProjectLocker's hosted Subversion subscriptions, you'll still need a suitable Subversion client to run on your workstation. Since ProjectLocker will work with virtually any Subversion client, we're tool-agnostic. But, we realize it's probably helpful for both our new customers and veteran clients to see what's currently available. Below, you'll find a list of some of the most popular open source Subversion clients on the web, arranged by supported operating systems. This list is by no means comprehensive. In fact, if you're using an SVN client that you love, and we haven't included it here, definitely let us know and we'll add it to the list.

ProjectLocker talks Subversion next week at ServoyWorld

Here at ProjectLocker, we believe in two things when it comes to delivering software: quality and speed. As a provider, we're always looking for ways to help software developers bring the richest, strongest, most reliable software applications to market in unprecedented timeframes. Most of those efforts come through the services and tools that we offer directly, such as our recent rollout of Automated Code Reviews. But we're also always on the lookout for partners, vendors, and other tools that meet that same criteria.

Which is why we're big fans of Servoy. Servoy is a Java-based development environment that allows you to create rich business applications that can be deployed both to multiple desktop platforms as well as over the internet with a single code base. I've witnessed a demo where a Servoy developer created a single form that drew data from both a Sybase database and a MySQL database at the same time without writing a single line of code in minutes. They say a demo team built this sample bug tracking application from scratch in 46 hours.

It's strong and fast, and now that they've converted their latest release, version 4.0, into an Eclipse plugin, their team sharing features are all provided through Subversion.

Given Servoy's new reliance on Subversion, ProjectLocker is very proud to participate in ServoyWorld2008, their international user conference, next week at the JW Marriott Resort in Las Vegas. Agile developers deliver faster when ProjectLocker teams with Rally Software

As I said before: We like Agile.

So, it only makes sense for ProjectLocker to lend a helping hand to the biggest Agile project management platform in the world. As we announced just last week, ProjectLocker has now entered into a strategic partnership with Rally Software, and we're just added the first of what we expect to be a series of technical integrations between our two products.

Starting today, all ProjectLocker Lite and Enterprise customers can configure their Subversion commit notifications to update tickets in Rally while also providing a link back to the commit itself within Rally. Now, teams who use Rally to manage their Agile projects can empower all of their team members (developers, testers, project managers, etc.) to look directly into the code in question on a given ticket or issue. Conversely, ProjectLocker customers who choose to use Rally can now add their powerful Agile management hub to their suite of tools, bringing all of the other stakeholding constituencies into the development process while still supporting many of their preferred applications. By giving both developers and testers easier direct access to the relevant source data, bugs and problems can be identified and resolved much more rapidly, increasing your time to market.

ProjectLocker joins the Agile Alliance

It's no secret: we like Agile Software Development here at ProjectLocker.

We're not dogmatic about any one particular methodology over another. As a company, we've always focused on supporting the most efficient ways software developers can save time, save money, and build better software. But if you look at the Agile Manifesto, I think you'll see some things that we might agree with:

"Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

Working software over comprehensive documentation

Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

Responding to change over following a plan"

With that in mind, especially given that supporting Agile teams is the raison d'être for ProjectLocker Lite as well as our long-standing partnership with the Agile & Scrum experts at 3Back, we felt it was time to make it official:

ProjectLocker is now a corporate member of the Agile Alliance.

For all of our current users who are Agile practicioners: I'd encourage you to take a moment and see what resources the alliance can offer to enhance your current project.
