Downloadable Backup Subscriptions are Here

Posted by C. G. Brown Tue, 09 Mar 2010 21:29:00 GMT

Many of our customers have expressed an interest in backing up their projects on a scheduled basis. We've had an archiving feature to back up customer projects for Enterprise customers for some time now, but we have now released scheduled backups to all of our customers. To access scheduled backups, just go to the Manage Subscriptions link in ProjectLocker Portal, on the left navigation bar under "Backup Links", choose the day of the week or day of the month you'd like and your projects, and confirm.

Monthly backups are just $5/month for unlimited projects. Weekly backups are $15/month for unlimited projects. All backups are kept at least 30 days, so you can download your backups to an off-site location of your choosing for additional peace of mind. If you just need an occasional backup, you can still use the Request Backups link to get your backup for a single project for just $2.50. However, if you find yourself requesting backups regularly, you can save money and time by scheduling a subscription. There's no contract, even if you're an annual or biannual subscriber, and you can cancel at any time.

We absolutely have not changed our policy regarding backups for disaster recovery. We continue to regularly back up all customer data internally to an encrypted, off-site location so that we can get you up and running in the event of a disaster on our side. Downloadable backups are just an additional convenience for customers who prefer to maintain their own copies of project data for historical/archiving reasons, or just as an additional measure of protection. In any case, you can continue to rely on ProjectLocker for the enterprise-grade support and infrastructure you expect at a great price.

As always, open a ticket in ProjectLocker Portal if you have any questions or issues with this or any other feature.

ProjectLocker Now Supports Restriction By IP Address and Domain

Posted by C. G. Brown Sat, 17 Oct 2009 17:46:00 GMT

A number of our customers have requested the ability to restrict access to services by IP address or domain, so that employees can only access Subversion or Trac from specific computers or locations. We now provide restriction by IP address or IP range. Access restriction is included at no additional cost for Venture, Equity, and Enterprise accounts. We will soon be providing it for Seed and Angel accounts for an additional charge.

We support four types of addresses:
  • Domains - e.g. "somedomain.com" or "my.domain.com"
  • IP Addresses or portions - e.g. "1.2.3.4" for a specific IP or "1.2" for any address beginning with "1.2."
  • IP Address ranges with Netmasks - e.g. "10.1.0.0/255.255.0.0"
  • IP Address ranges with CIDR Netmasks - e.g. "10.1.0.0/16

To configure your account, just go to the Account Information link and check the "Restrict Access by IP" checkbox, then save your changes. Then, for the project you wish to restrict access to, click the "Restrict Project Access by IP" link and follow the instructions.

Once IP restriction is set up, users will still be able to access ProjectLocker Portal from anywhere with their authentication credentials, but will not be able to use Subversion or Trac unless they are coming from an authorized location.

With IP restrictions, you can rest easy, knowing you have an added measure of security and Enterprise-grade protection, all at the lowest prices in the industry.

Talk on Trac at LinuxWorld

Posted by C. G. Brown Thu, 14 Aug 2008 13:14:00 GMT

I noticed that Steven Ellis of OpenMedia recently gave a talk on Trac at LinuxWorld.  From looking at the slides (pdf), it looks to be a good overview of Trac's features and functions, along with some tips and tricks.  I looked over the presentation to see if there's anything that could benefit our current and potential users, and was pleased to learn that a lot of the tips he offered were to do things like back your Trac up, installing the post-commit hook that links it to Subversion, and so on.  At ProjectLocker, our hosted Trac service already takes care of these tasks for you, so you can focus on running your project instead of running your Trac.  It was a good reminder as to why Trac hosting and Subversion hosting provide real value to teams, especially when integrated to other popular hosted tools.

If you are trying to help people in your organization understand what Trac is and why you need it, this presentation isn't a bad place to start.

HTTP Access Now Available for PL Lite

Posted by C. G. Brown Tue, 05 Aug 2008 23:52:00 GMT

A number of our customers have requested the ability to access their Subversion repositories and Trac projects over standard HTTP rather than over HTTPS.  We have now added this feature, and account admins can turn HTTP access on and off at will.  To do this:

       1. Go to List Projects or Show Project
       2. Click the Edit link associated with the project you wish to change.
       3. Check or uncheck the "Enable HTTP Access" box.  If checked, your users will be able to use both HTTP and HTTPS.  If unchecked, only HTTPS will be supported.
       4. Press the Save button.  Your settings will be saved and the server should be updated within moments.

If you're having speed issues at your site due to HTTPS, you may benefit from enabling HTTP access for some projects.  We hope you find this new addition useful.

As always, just open a ticket in ProjectLocker Portal if there are other features we can add to better serve you.

Agile developers deliver faster when ProjectLocker teams with Rally Software

Posted by Damon Young Wed, 25 Jun 2008 16:05:00 GMT

As I said before: We like Agile.

So, it only makes sense for ProjectLocker to lend a helping hand to the biggest Agile project management platform in the world.  As we announced just last week, ProjectLocker has now entered into a strategic partnership with Rally Software, and we're just added the first of what we expect to be a series of technical integrations between our two products.

Starting today, all ProjectLocker Lite and Enterprise customers can configure their Subversion commit notifications to update tickets in Rally while also providing a link back to the commit itself within Rally.  Now, teams who use Rally to manage their Agile projects can empower all of their team members (developers, testers, project managers, etc.) to look directly into the code in question on a given ticket or issue.  Conversely, ProjectLocker customers who choose to use Rally can now add their powerful Agile management hub to their suite of tools, bringing all of the other stakeholding constituencies into the development process while still supporting many of their preferred applications.  By giving both developers and testers easier direct access to the relevant source data, bugs and problems can be identified and resolved much more rapidly, increasing your time to market.

If you're a Rally customer interested in using ProjectLocker, or a ProjectLocker customer interested in Rally, contact us at sales@projectlocker.com, and we can help you get started with whichever half of the partnership you need.  If you're currently using both ProjectLocker and Rally, contact our technical support staff, and they can walk you through the integration process.

In the meantime, watch this space for future integration announcements.

ProjectLocker joins the Agile Alliance

Posted by Damon Young Wed, 25 Jun 2008 15:25:00 GMT

ProjectLocker is an Agile Alliance Corporate Member

It's no secret: we like Agile Software Development here at ProjectLocker.

We're not dogmatic about any one particular methodology over another.  As a company, we've always focused on supporting the most efficient ways software developers can save time, save money, and build better software.  But if you look at the Agile Manifesto, I think you'll see some things that we might agree with:

"Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

Working software over comprehensive documentation

Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

Responding to change over following a plan"

With that in mind, especially given that supporting Agile teams is the raison d'être for ProjectLocker Lite as well as our long-standing partnership with the Agile & Scrum experts at 3Back, we felt it was time to make it official:

ProjectLocker is now a corporate member of the Agile Alliance.

For all of our current users who are Agile practicioners: I'd encourage you to take a moment and see what resources the alliance can offer to enhance your current project.

And if you're an Agile practicioner or Alliance member who's not using ProjectLocker yet, I think you'll like what you see.

New ProjectLocker Lite Trac Features

Posted by C. G. Brown Sat, 26 Apr 2008 16:12:00 GMT

We've made several additions to ProjectLocker Lite Trac recently to improve your experience.  Here are some of the new features:

Plugins

We've installed the following plugins:

If there are other plugins that you think you and other customers may find useful, file a ticket with us and we'll install them, pending a security review and making sure they don't cause any issues.  You can activate plugins that we have installed by going to the Admin menu in Trac itself.

Improved Subversion-Trac Interaction

We've installed the trac-contrib commit hook that allows you to cause action to occur on Trac tickets.  If you use the right syntax, you can make commit messages leave comments on Trac tickets or even mark tickets as fixed just by doing a Subversion commit.  The syntax is described in detail in the Support FAQ.

Trac Upgrade via Web

Installation of some plugins requires an upgrade of your Trac environment.  After some customer feedback, we have added a link to run trac-admin upgrade from ProjectLocker Portal, so after installing the Tags or Discussions plugin, if your Trac instance indicates that it needs an upgrade, go to your Trac Service Properties for your project and click "Run trac-admin Upgrade". Your instance will upgrade itself on the spot and you can proceed with your work.

As always, we welcome your feedback on how we can make our service more useful for you.

Downloadable Backups are Here!

Posted by C. G. Brown Wed, 27 Feb 2008 18:57:00 GMT

While we take every precaution to make sure customer data is backed up and protected, our ProjectLocker Lite customers have been clamoring for the ability to download Subversion backups and Trac backups, similar to the Archival service for ProjectLocker Enterprise.  The ability to take on-demand backups is now here.  For just $2.50 per project per backup, you can create a backup accessible in ProjectLocker Portal and downloadable for 30 days.  You can access this via the Backups section in ProjectLocker Portal, visible to all account administrators.

We are open to suggestions for features and improvements to this service.  We're trying to provide as many services and features as we can while keeping the prices low, but we'd love to hear your thoughts.
